Most Poetic Song

Piano Man by Billy Joel

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin

He says, "Son, can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes."

la la la, di da da
La la, di di da da dum

Chorus:
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us all feelin' all right

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke and he'll light up your smoke
But there's some place that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me."
As his smile ran away from his face
"Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

Oh, la la la, di da da
La la, di da da da dum

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessman slowly gets stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone

Chorus
sing us a song you're the piano man
sing us a song tonight
well we're all in the mood for a melody
and you got us all feeling alright

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see
To forget about their life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"

Oh, la la la, di da da
La la, di da da da dum

Chorus:
sing us a song you're the piano man
sing us a song tonight
well we're all in the mood for a melody
and you got us all feeling alright

In my opinion, the song Piano Man by Billy Joel is the most poetic song on the website straypoetry.com. This song holds many examples of poetic elements within it. For example things like, imagery, alliteration, hyperboles, personification, and rhyme schemes can be found throughout the song. The first piece of imagery that I found in this song would be in the first line, “its nine o’clock on a Saturday.” Here, you can picture a clock that reads nine o’clock. The next three lines that follow are also examples of imagery. In them, you can picture things like a restless crowd of people, or an old man sitting next to someone while having a good time at the bar. The first example of alliteration can be immediately found throughout the whole chorus. “Sing us a song; you’re the piano man, sing us a song tonight, well, were all in the mood for a melody, and you’ve got us feelin’ alright.” First, sing and song, in the first two lines. Next, you can see Well were and mood and melody in the third line all have to words starting with the same letter. The first hyperbole is shown in the line that says “He says, ‘Bill I believe this is killing me.’” This is an exaggeration. Also, the line “as the smile ran away from his face” is an example of personification because a smile cannot run away from his face. Thus, this song is full of poetic elements.

Social Relevance

Courtesy Of The Red White & Blue by: Toby Keith

The song "Courtesy of The Red White & Blue" by Toby Keith is about September 11. Toby starts out by telling the listener how his daddy served in the army to keep his mother, brother, sister, and him all safe. He also tells us how while he served in the army, he lost his right eye and altough this was a tragedy, it was all to keep his family safe and stay in the "land of the free." The part of this song that clearly tells us he is talking about the attack of September 11th is in the second stanza. He first says "Now this nation that I love is falling under attack." This refers to the terrorists that had decided to attack our nation. The next line then talks about a "sucker punch right in the back." This line refers to the surprise attack its self because nobody knew that this was going to happen of course and when it did happen, the whole world was chaos. Toby then talks about how when it did happen, everybody was so upset that anyone could ever think of doing this.

Fifteen by: Taylor Swift

The song Fifteen by Taylor Swift can relate to really any teenage girl who has really had her heart broken. I think this can range through the ages of thirteen to eighteen. This song immediately talks about a teenage girls first day of highschool, how she talks to her friends she hasnt "seen in a while." Taylor then talks about how it is the freshman year and how every girl has one of those rivalries she wants to avoid yet can't wait for her to leave highschool so she doesnt have to deal with her. But then Taylor talks about how every girl also hopes to have a senior boy notice her, and all of a sudden she feels "special." Most people say that most guys will just tell you anything you want to hear, and in one sense this is true but not all guys are this way. Girls don't listen to these people becuase most of us are stubborn and want to learn from our own mistakes. But, "when you are fifteen and somebody tells you they love you, youre gonna believe them." This statement is very true. At this age, most of us don't know what we should believe and who to trust. This song is a very good example of social relevance.

Where Were You by: Alan Jackson

This song shows socail relevance towards September eleventh also. The first hint you get is when he says "Did you stand there in shock at the site of That black smoke rising against that blue sky." When the planes crashed into the twin towers, there must have been a lot of smoke. This songs also seems as though it is dedicated to a certain person. Maybe a family member that was not around at the time of this day. Alan puts many questions in his song asking him where he was during this time, how he felt, what he did, etc.

Comfort #2

Letter To Me by: Brad Paisley

If I could write a letter to me
And send it back in time to myself at 17
First I'd prove it's me by saying look under your bed
There's a Skoal can and a Playboy no one else would know you hid
And then I'd say I know its tough
When you break up after seven months
And yeah I know you really liked her and it just don't seem fair
All I can say is pain like that is fast and it's rare

[1st Chorus]
And oh you got so much going for you going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
She wasn't right for you
And still you feel like there's a knife sticking out of your back
And you're wondering if you'll survive
You'll make it through this and you'll see
You're still around to write this letter to me

At the stop sign at Tomlinson and Eighth
Always stop completely don't just tap your brakes
And when you get a date with Bridgett make sure the tank is full
On second thought forget it that one turns out kinda cool
Each and every time you have a fight
Just assume you're wrong and daddy is right
And you should really thank Mrs. Bringman
She spend so much extra time
It's like she sees the diamond underneath
And she's polishing you 'til you shine

[2nd Chorus]
And oh you got so much going for you going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
Tonight's the bonfire rally
But you're staying home instead because if you fail Algebra
Mom and dad will kill you dead
Trust me you'll squeak by and get a C
And you're still around to write this letter to me

You've got so much up ahead
You'll make new friends
You should see your kids and wife
And I'd end up saying have no fear
These are nowhere near the best years of your life

I guess I'll see you in the mirror
When you're a grown man
P.S. "go hug Aunt Rita every chance you can"

[3rd Chorus]
And oh you got so much going for you going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
I wish you'd study Spanish
I wish you'd take a typing class
I wish you wouldn't worry, let it be
I'd say have a little faith and you'll see

If I could write a letter to me
To me

In this song, Brad tells us about how he has gone through many things in his life and sometimes it can be hard but in the end, things have worked out for the better and he is comfortable where he is now. Brad states, "And oh you got so much going for you going right, But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
Tonight's the bonfire rally, But you're staying home instead because if you fail Algebra, Mom and dad will kill you dead." Brad talks about how when he was seventeen, the only thing he could think of was Friday night and what he was going to be doing. Also, he tells us about how he skips the bonfire rally to stay home and study spanish which in the end, most likely paid off for him.

My Front Porch Looking In by: Lonestar

Oh yeah
Yeah oh yeah

The only ground I ever owned was sticking to my shoes
Now I look at my front porch and this panoramic view
I can sit and watch the fields fill up
With rays of glowing sun
Or watch the moon lay on the fences
Like that's where it was hung
My blessings are in front of me
It's not about the land
I'll never beat the view
From my front porch looking in

There's a carrot top who can barely walk
With a sippy cup of milk
A little blue eyed blonde with shoes on wrong
'Cause she likes to dress herself
And the most beautiful girl holding both of them
And the view I love the most
Is my front porch looking in, yeah

I've traveled here and everywhere
Following my job
I've seen the paintings from the air
Brushed by the hand of God
The mountains and the canyons reach from sea to shining sea
But I can't wait to get back home
To the one he made for me
It's anywhere I'll ever go and everywhere I've been
Nothing takes my breath away
Like my front porch looking in

There's a carrot top who can barely walk
With a sippy cup of milk
A little blue eyed blonde with shoes on wrong
'Cause she likes to dress herself
And the most beautiful girl holding both of them
Yeah the view I love the most
Is my front porch looking in

I see what beautiful is about
When I'm looking in
Not when I'm looking out

There's a carrot top who can barely walk
With a sippy cup of milk
A little blue eyed blonde with shoes on wrong
'Cause she likes to dress herself
And the most beautiful girl holding both of them
Yeah the view I love the most

Oh, the view I love the most
Is my front porch looking in
Yeah
Oh, there's a carrot top who can barely walk
(From my front porch looking in)
A little blue eyed blonde with shoes on wrong, yeah
And the most beautiful girl
(Beautiful girl
From my front porch looking in)
Holding both of them
Oh, yeah

In this song, comfort in shown becuase the singer tells about how he likes his life just the way it is and he would not change anything for it. He tells the listener how he is comfortable at the state he is in and basically has everything he could even want or ask for.

Joy #2

The Best Day by: Taylor Swift

I'm five years old it's getting cold i've got my big coat on
i hear your laugh and look up smiling at you i run and run
past the pumpkin patch and the tractor rides look now the sky is gold
i hug your legs and fall asleep on the way home

i don't know why all the trees change in the fall
i know you're not scared of anything at all
don't know if snow white's house is near or far away
but i know i had the best day with you today

i'm thirteen now and don't know how my friends could be so mean
i come home crying and you hold me tight and grab the keys
and we drive and drive until we found a town far enough away
and we talk and window shop till i forgot all their names

i don't know who i'm gonna talk to now at school
but i know i'm laughing on the car ride home with you
don't know how long it's gonna take to feel ok
but i know i had the best day with you today

i have an excellent father
his strength is making me stronger
god smiles on my little brother
inside and out he's better than i am

i grew up in a pretty house and i had space to run
and i had the best days with you

there is a video i found from back when i was three
you set up a paint set in the kitchen and you're talking to me
it's the age of princesses and pirate ships and the seven dwarfs
daddy's smart and you're the prettiest lady in the whole wide world

now i know why all the trees change in the fall
i know you were on my side even when i was wrong
and i love you for giving me your eyes
staying back and watching me shine and i didn't know if you knew
so i'm taking this chance to say that i had the best day with you today

The Best Day by Taylor Swift is a song she had dedicated to her mom about events throughout her whole life, so far, that she has spent with he rmom and really enjoyed. "There is a video i found from back when i was three, you set up a paint set in the kitchen and you're talking to me, it's the age of princesses and pirate ships and the seven dwarfs, daddy's smart and you're the prettiest lady in the whole wide world." Here, Taylor simply tells her mom about how she remembers her setting up a paint set in the kitchen and she remembers liking princesses and pirate ships and all other kinds of things. She then tells her mom how she thinks her fathers smart and her mothers the prettiest lady in this world.

Laughed Until We Cried by: Jason Aldean

Goin’ through my closet the other day
I found an old yearbook
Flipped right to the page of that senior trip
Down there on that Panama strip
We all started yellin’ when we smelled the beach
Couldn't wait to try our fake I.D.’s
We only had a few days
And a whole lot of memories to make

Oh man we were livin’
Didn't waste one minute
We talked and drank and danced and said goodbye
We laughed until we cried

This past year my family
Was sittin’ cross-legged 'round the Christmas tree
Listenin’ to granddad
We all knew it probably be his last
He was crackin’ jokes and we were takin’ turns
Tellin’ stories ‘bout fishin’ or lessons learned
Out on the porch with him
We all felt like kids again

Oh man we were livin
Sittin' there reminiscin'
We sang and talked and traveled back in time
We laughed until we cried

It's like the best days under the sun
Every emotion rolled into one
A little of this a little of that
Kinda happy kinda sad

Just the other night the baby was cryin’
So I got out of bed rocked her awhile
And I held her tight
And I told her it would be all right
And my mind went back to a few years ago
When we tried so long
We almost gave up hope
And I remember you
Comin' in and tellin’ me the news

Oh man we were livin’
Goin’ crazy in the kitchen
We danced and screamed and held each other tight
We laughed until we cried

In the first stanza of this song, Jason immediately shows us how he is happy. He starts to reminisce about old times that bring joy into his life. "I found an old yearbook, flipped right to the page of that senior trip." He then speaks about how he had so much fun on this trip and enjoyed life with all of his friends. Also, near the end of the song, he talks about his kids, and how he and his wife could not get pregnant and almost gave up hope in trying but the one day she came in to tell him the news, they were both very happy and extremely joyfull.

Friendship #2

I'm Only Me When I'm With You by: Taylor Swift

Friday night beneath the stars,
in a field behind your yard,
you and I are paintin` pictures in the sky.
And sometimes we don`t say a thing;
just listen to the crickets sing.
Everything I need is right here by my side.
And I know everything about you
I don`t wanna live without you.

[Chorus:]
I`m only up when you`re not down.
Don`t wanna fly if you`re still on the ground.
It`s like no matter what I do.
Well you drive me crazy half the time;
the other half I`m only trying to let you know that what I feel is true.
And I`m only me when I`m with you.

Just a small town boy and girl
livin` in a crazy world.
Tryin` to figure out what is and isn`t true.
And I don`t try to hide my tears.
The secrets or my deepest fears.
Through it all nobody gets me like you do.
And you know everything about me.
You say you can`t live without me.

[Chorus]

When I`m with anybody else it`s so hard to be myself.
Only you can tell.

[Chorus:]
That I`m only up when you`re not down.
Don`t wanna fly if you`re still on the ground.
It`s like no matter what I do.
Well you drive me crazy half the time;
the other half I`m only trying to let you know that what I feel is true.
And I`m only me
Who I wanna be
Well, I`m only me when I`m with you
With you
Uh huh
Yeah

In this song, Taylor sings about how she is not the same around anyone but her bestfriend. Examples of this are shown right in the chorus of the song. "I`m only up when you`re not down. Don`t wanna fly if you`re still on the ground.
It`s like no matter what I do. Well you drive me crazy half the time;
the other half I`m only trying to let you know that what I feel is true. And I`m only me when I`m with you." If you think about it, Taylor is basically saying how she is only happy when her friend is happy, she doesnt want to fly unless her friend is going to fly with her, even though you make me crazy most of the time, I only act myself around you.

Friendship

My Wish by: Rascal Flatts

I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow,
And each road leads you where you want to go,
And if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
And if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window,
If it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile,

But more than anything, more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.

I hope you never look back, but ya never forget,
All the ones who love you, in the place you left,
I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,
And you help somebody every chance you get,
Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake,
And you always give more than you take.

But more than anything, yeah, and more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.

This is my wish
I hope you know somebody loves you
May all your dreams stay big

Immediately, in the first line he tells his friend how he wants for his life to be easy with no struggles and have things go the way he wants. "I hope the days go easy and the moments pass slow, and each road leads you where you want to go."
Also, he tells about his "wish" for his friend. "My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold, And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too, yeah this is my wish." He is telling his friend how he wants his life to go the way he wants for it to, he wants him to keep dreaming and never give up, and not to worry to much. He also wants for him to know that he never needs to do anything above his level, and for him to always know there is someone there to support him.

Allusion

Cleaning This Gun by: Rodney Atkins

The Declaration of Independence
Think I could tell you that first sentence
But then I’m lost

I can't begin to count the theories
I've had pounded in my head
That I forgot

I don't remember all that Spanish
Or the Gettysburg address
But there is one speech from high school
I'll never forget

(Chorus)
Come on in boy sit on down
And tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter do you now?
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl
Her momma's world
She deserves respect
That’s what she'll get
Ain’t it son?
Hey y'all run along and have some fun
I'll see you when you get back
Bet I’ll be up all night
Still cleanin' this gun

Well now that I’m a father
I’m scared to death one day my daughter
Is gonna find
That teenage boy I used to be
That seems to have just one thing on his mind

She’s growin' up so fast
It won't be long before
I’ll have to put the fear of god into
Some kid at the door

(Chorus)
Come on in boy sit on down
And tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter do you now?
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl
Her momma's world
She deserves respect
That’s what she'll get
Now ain't it son?
Y’all go out and have some fun
I'll see you when you get back
Probably be up all night
Still cleanin' this gun

Now it's all for show
Ain’t nobody gonna get hurt
It’s just a daddy thing
And hey, believe me, it works

(Chorus)
Come on in boy sit on down
And tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter do you now?
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl
Her momma's world
She deserves respect
That’s what she'll get
Now ain't it son?
Y’all run along and have a little fun
I'll see you when you get back
Probably be up all night
Still cleanin' this gun

Son, now y'all buckle up and have her back by te- let's say about nine...thirty.
Drive safe.

This song shows different allusions of course only aluding back Rodney's chilhood/the old times he had when he was a teenager. In this song, Rodney compares teenage boys and the way they act to the way he did back in the day. This song also talks about how these boys like his daughter and he wants them to know that if they ever break her heart, he will hurt them back.. and he wants them to be sure of that.

Allegory

She's Everything by: Brad Paisley

She's a yellow pair of running shoes
A holey pair of jeans
She looks great in cheap sunglasses
She looks great in anything
She's I want a piece of chocolate
Take me to a movie
She's I can't find a thing to wear
Now and then she's moody

She's a Saturn with a sunroof
With her brown hair a-blowing
She's a soft place to land
And a good feeling knowing
She's a warm conversation
That I wouldn't miss for nothing
She's a fighter when she's mad
And she's a lover when she's loving

[Chorus]
And she's everything I ever wanted
And everything I need
I talk about her, I go on and on and on
'Cause she's everything to me

She's a Saturday out on the town
And a church girl on Sunday
She's a cross around her neck
And a cuss word 'cause its Monday
She's a bubble bath and candles
Baby come and kiss me
She's a one glass of wine
And she's feeling kinda tipsy

She's the giver I wish I could be
And the stealer of the covers
She's a picture in my wallet
Of my unborn children's mother
She's the hand that I'm holding
When I'm on my knees and praying
She's the answer to my prayer
And she's the song that I'm playing

[Repeat chorus]

She's the voice I love to hear
Someday when I'm ninety
She's that wooden rocking chair
I want rocking right beside me
Everyday that passes
I only love her more
Yeah, she's the one
That I'd lay down my own life for

And she's everything I ever wanted
And everything I need
She's everything to me
Yeah she's everything to me

Everything I ever wanted
And everything I need
She's everything to me

This song is a great example of allegory. In this song, Brad compares the girl he loves to all of these great things. This is Brad's way of expressing his love for her. This song also tells about how Brad would love to be with this girl for the rest of his life. "She's that wooden rocking chair, I want rocking right beside me." This song uses so many different symbols to show how the girl he loves acts.
Ambiguity

Temporary Home by: Carrie Underwood

Little boy, 6 years old
A little too used to bein' alone
Another new mom and dad, another school
Another house that'll never be home
When people ask him how he likes this place
He looks up and says with a smile upon his face

"This is my temporary home
It's not where I belong
Windows and rooms that I'm passin' through
This is just a stop, on the way to where I'm going
I'm not afraid because I know this is my
Temporary Home."

Young mom on her own
She needs a little help got nowhere to go
She's lookin' for a job, lookin' for a way out
Because a half-way house will never be a home
At night she whispers to her baby girl
Someday we'll find a place here in this world

"This is our temporary home
It's not where we belong
Windows and rooms that we're passin' through
This is just a stop, on the way to where we're going
I'm not afraid because I know this is our
Temporary Home.

Old man, hospital bed
The room is filled with people he loves
And he whispers don't cry for me
I'll see you all someday
He looks up and says "I can see God's face"

"This is my temporary Home
It's not where I belong
Windows and rooms that I'm passin' through
This was just a stop,on the way To where I'm going
I'm not afraid because I know this was
My temporary home."

This song is an example of ambiguity because it has a "hidden meaning" in it. In this song, Carrie talks about a little boy who is always being sent to a bunch of different homes. Maybe suggesting that he has no parents and that he was even a foster child. Also, this song talks about a little girl who was raised by a single mother on her own. Carrie tells us about how the mother is on her own, with out a job, and no where to live and just needs a break from the struggles. Yet, she is always positive towards her little girl and tells her someday they wont have to live through struggles anymore and they'll be okay. The hidden meaning behind all of this is that no one ever said that life was going to be easy, there is always going to be struggles no matter how fortunate or unfortunate you are. So, you should just live life to the fullest, be happy with what you have and know that someday everything will get better.

Irony

White Liar by: Miranda Lambert

Hey white liar
the truth comes out a little at a time
and it spreads just like a fire
slips off of your tongue like turpentine
and i don´t know why
white liar

you better be careful what you do
i wouldn´t wanna be in your shoes
if they ever found you out
you better be careful what you say
it never really added up any way
I got friends in this town

Hey white liar
The truth comes out a little at a time
and it spreads just like a fire
slips off of your tongue like turpentine
and I don´t know why
white liar

You said you went out to a bar
and walked some lady to her car
but your face has more to tell
cuz my cousin saw you on the street
with a red head named Bernice
Turns out you don´t lie too well

Hey white liar
The truth comes out a little at a time
and it spreads just like a fire
slips off of your tongue like turpentine
and I don´t know why
white liar

Here´s a bombshell just for you
turns out I´ve been lying too

Yeah I´m a white liar
The truth comes out a little at a time
and it spreads just like a fire
slips off of my tongue like turpentine
and I don´t know why
White Liar

This song shows situational irony when Miranda is accusing this boy of lying to her yet he tried to back himself up by saying that all he was doing was walking some lady to her car. Later in the song, she states "cuz my cousin saw you on the street,
with a red head named Bernice,Turns out you don´t lie too well." The fact that he wasn't such a good liar shows irony.

Here Comes Goodbye by: Rascal Flatts

I can hear the truck tires coming up the gravel road
And its not like her to drive that slow, nothings on her radio
Footsteps on the front porch, I hear my doorbell
She usually comes right in, now I can tell

Here comes goodbye, here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain, Here comes me wishing things had never changed
And she was right here in my arms tonight, but here comes goodbye

I can hear her say I love you like it was yesterday
And I can see it written on her face that she had never felt this way
One day I thought Id see her with her daddy by her side
And violins would play here comes the bride

But here comes goodbye, here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear Im gonna cry
Here comes the pain, Here comes me wishing things had never changed(d)
And she was right here in my arms tonight, but here comes goodbye

Why does it have to go from good to gone?
Before the lights turn on, yeah and you're left alone
All alone, but here comes goodbye

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Here comes goodbye, here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain, Here comes me wishing things had never changed
And she was right here in my arms tonight, but here comes goodbye

This song shows irony because he talks about how his girlfriend is pulling into the drive way of their home and everything shes doing isnt like herself. He says "and its not like her to drive that slow, with nothing on the radio." He is telling us how she usually drives fast and listens to music but wasn't tonight. This is irony because he senses the break up coming on and eventually it happens.

Paradox

Forever and Always by: Taylor Swift

Once upon a time, I believe it was a Tuesday when I caught your eye
And we caught onto something
I hold onto the night, you looked me in the eye and told me you loved me

Were you just kidding?
'cause it seems to me, this thing is breaking down
We almost never speak
I don't feel welcome anymore
Baby what happened, please tell me?

'cause one second it was perfect, now you're halfway out the door

And I stare at the phone, he still hasn't called
And then you feel so low you cant feel nothing at all
And you flashback to when he said forever and always
Oh, and it rains in your bedroom
Everything is wrong
It rains when you're here and it rains when you're gone
Cause I was there when you said forever and always

Was I out of line?
Did I say something way too honest, made you run and hide
Like a scared little boy
I looked into your eyes
Thought I knew you for a minute, now I'm not so sure

So here's everything coming down to nothing
Here's to silence that cuts me to the core
Where is this going? Thought I knew for a minute, but I don't anymore

And I stare at the phone, he still hasn't called
And then you feel so low you cant feel nothing at all
And you flashback to when he said forever and always
Oh, and it rains in your bedroom
Everything is wrong
It rains when you're here and it rains when you're gone
'cause I was there when you said forever and always
You didn't mean it baby, I don't think so

Back up, baby, back up
Did you forget everything
Back up, baby, back up
Did you forget everything

'cause it rains in your bedroom
Everything is wrong
It rains when you're here and it rains when you're gone
'cause I was there when you said forever and always

Oh, I stare at the phone, he still hasn't called
And then you feel so low you cant feel nothing at all
And you flashback to when we said forever and always

And it rains in your bedroom
Everything is wrong
It rains when you're here and it rains when you're gone
'cause I was there when you said forever and always
You didn't mean it baby, you said forever and always... yeah

This shows paradox becuase Taylor talks about how this boy told her they would be togerther forever and always but then he goes and breaks her heart.

Personification

Why by Jason Aldean

It's 3 AM and I finally say
I'm sorry for acting that way
I didn't really mean to make you cry
Oh baby, sometimes I wonder why

[CHORUS]
Why does it always have to come down
To you leaving
Before I'll say 'I love you'
Why do I always use the words
That cut the deepest
When I know how much it hurts you
Oh baby why, do I do that to you

I know I'd never let you walk away
So why do I push you 'til you break
And why are you always on the verge of good-bye
Before I'll show you how I really feel inside

[CHORUS]
Why does it always have to come down
To you leaving
Before I'll say 'I love you'
Why do I always use the words
That cut the deepest
When I know how much it hurts you
Oh baby why, do I do that to you

Why do I always use the words that cut the deepest
When I know how much it hurts you
Oh baby why, do I do that to you
Why do I do that to you

In the second stanza of this song, he states "why do i always use the words that cut the deepest." This shows personification becuase, words can not cut.

Another Try by Josh Turner

All the things I've felt and never shared.
All the times that she was lonely with me there.
Tears I wouldn't let fall from my eyes.
And how I let her go without a fight.

The reasons I'm alone, I know by heart.
But I don't wanna spend forever in the dark.
I swear next time I'll hang on for dear life.
If love ever gives me another try.

There's no changing things that we regret.
The best that we can hope for is one more chance.
If the hands of time could just move in reverse.
I wouldn't make the same mistake again with her.

The reasons I'm alone, I know by heart.
But I don't wanna spend forever in the dark.
I swear next time I'll hang on for dear life.
If love ever gives me another try.

Oh the reasons I'm alone I know by heart.
But I don't wanna spend forever in the dark.
I swear next time I'll hang on for dear life,
If love ever gives me another try.

Oh if love ever gives me another try.

In the second stanza Josh says "If love ever gives me another try." This is personification because love can not simply give someone a try.

Song Analysis

Patsy Cline was born on September 8, 1932 in Winchester Virginia, to the parents of Hilda Patterson and Samuel Lawrence Hensley. She was born by the name of Virginia Patterson Hensley, but later became Patsy Cline. Her father, Samuel, had to children from an earlier marriage named Tempie Glenn, and Randolph which became Patsy’s half sister and half brother. Because her family moved about twenty times before Patsy was in eighth grade, she did not really have a place where her childhood began. When Patsy was little, she was into dancing and had her dreams set to become a dancer. The person who inspired her the most was Shirley Temple. Not expecting to win, Patsy’s mother entered her into a dancing contest when she was little and Patsy ended up winning first prize. Soon after, she had lost interest in dancing and turned her dreams completely to music. First, Patsy enjoyed playing piano but then she decided she liked singing instead. Although Patsy had never learned notes and never knew what key she was singing, she still sounded okay. Patsy’s singing career started when she was thirteen years old in her church choir. Around the age of thirteen Patsy got terrible sick where her she had a terrible infection in her throat and her heart actually stopped beating. Her doctor had decided to put her into an oxygen tent and Patsy claims this was just the turn point to her career. She started in local radio shows, singing at dances. Patsy also had the advantage of meeting the right people which had gotten her a record deal. In the year of 1953, Patsy had married Gerald Cline.

Patsy Cline’s song “I Fall to Pieces” is a song about her break up with a boy who she can no longer stand to see because; he brings so much pain to her heart. There are examples of hyperboles, imagery, alliteration and rhyme scheme. The main example of hyperbole in this song is in the title “I Fall to Pieces.” This is a hyperbole because Patsy is saying how every time she sees this boy, she falls to pieces yet, it is physically impossible to fall to pieces. In the last line of the second stanza, Patsy shows some imagery by saying “You walk by and I fall to pieces.” Here, you get a picture in your head of someone walking by Patsy and seeing her heart melt because she knows it is over. In the third stanza, Patsy shows some alliteration. “Each time someone speaks your name, I fall to pieces.” This is showing consonance alliteration with the two words someone and speaks. Consonance alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant two or more times. The words someone and speak are both words that start with s therefore, they are the repetition of a consonant. There are also many rhyme schemes shown in this song. In the first stanza, the second and fourth line rhyme. “Each time I see you again,” and “How can I be just your friend?” The words again and friend make this a rhyme scheme because both words at the end of the sentence rhyme. In the second stanza, both the second and third lines rhyme. “You want me to forget, pretend we never met.” and “And I’ve tried and I’ve tried, but I haven’t yet.” These two lines both end with words that end in “et” which makes this too a rhyme scheme. The second and fourth lines rhyme in the third stanza of Patsy Clines song “I Fall To Pieces.” The two lines state; “Each time someone speaks your name,” and “Time only adds to the flame.” The words name and flame both end in the “ame” sound making them rhyme. Finally, in the last stanza of the song, the second and third lines rhyme. “Someone who will love me too, the way you used too.” and, “But each time I go out with someone new,” both lines end with the same sound making this stanza rhyme also.

It may have been said that Patsy Cline had a bad childhood but, clearly she made the best of it. Because Patsy’s mother was only sixteen when she gave birth to her, they were more like sisters that mother and daughter. Also, Patsy transformed to a girl who had no idea what she wanted to do with her life to this amazing singer/song writer. Patsy had been through a lot, from a terrible illness that led to her singing career, to a head on car collision Patsy had gotten into with her brother Sam that nearly killed her and ended her singing career. Sure Patsy started off as an ordinary tone-deaf person who didn’t even know what hitting a not meant but, look where she is now. In conclusion Patsy Cline is arguably one of the best singers from the 1960’s.

Point Of View

1st person narrative: I Heart Question Mark by Taylor Swift
I chose this song because it was a perfect example of first person narrative becuase, in this song, Taylor tells about everything she had to do to recover from her break up. In this song Taylor says "Think about what I had to do, yah. Wake up, smell the break up, fix my heart, put on my make up, another mess I didn't plan." This is a good example because she is talking about herself by using the word "I."

2nd person narrative: Your Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins
I chose this song because Trace uses the words you and your a lot. By saying this he makes the outside listeners feel as though they are the characters in the story being told. For example, in the song he says "your gonna miss this, your gonna want this back, your gonna wish this days hadnt gone by so fast."

3rd person: Oh My My My by Taylor Swift
In this song, Taylor is telling a story about her and a boy with out showing her feelings towards it. Instead, Taylor chose to show her and the boys parents feelings toward it. The song says "And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
Growing up and falling in love and our mamas smiled, And rolled their eyes and said oh my my my." This song shows that the dads want these two kids to grow up and fall in love but the moms simply feel as though it is to early to even be talking about this.

Multiple Person: Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
In this song, the artists go back and forth with their feelings. First, she talks about how she misses this boy and needs him. Next, she is telling about how she had told him earlier she would not call becuase she did not think he was needed in her life anymore. Third, she goes back to how she needs him again. "It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now. Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control and I need you now. And I don't know how I can do without. I just need you now"

Hyperbole

Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You
By: Kellie Pickler

I remember the way you made love to me
Like I was all you'd ever need
Did you change your mind
Well I didn't change mine
Now here I am trying to make sense of it all
We were best friends now we don't even talk
You broke my heart
Ripped my world apart

Didn't you know how much I loved you
Didn't you know how much I loved you, baby
I gave you everything, every part of me
Didn't you feel it when I touched you
Didn't I rock you when I loved you, baby
Baby, tell me
Didn't you know how much I loved you

I can't get you out of my head
I still feel you in this bed
Left me all alone
You couldn't be more gone
From falling apart to fighting mad
From wanting you back to not giving a damn
I've felt it all
I've been to the wall

Didn't you know how much I loved you
Didn't you know how much I loved you, baby
I gave you everything, every part of me
Didn't you feel it when I touched you
Didn't I rock you when I loved you, baby
Baby, tell me
Didn't you know how much I loved you

One day justice will come and find you
And I'll be right there in your memory to remind you

Didn't you know how much I loved you
Didn't you know how much I loved you, baby
I gave you everything, every part of me
Didn't you feel it when I touched you
Didn't I rock you when I loved you, baby
Baby, tell me

Didn't you know how much I loved you
Didn't you know how much I loved you, baby
I gave you everything, every part of me
Didn't you feel it when I touched you
Didn't I rock you when I loved you, baby
Baby, tell me
I gave you everything, every part of me

The hyperbole I found in this song is in the first stanza of the song. Kellie says "you broke my heart, you ripped my world apart." I think she is overly exaggerating saying that he ripped her world apart because, it is not possible.

Alliteration

Tim McGraw
By: Taylor Swift

You said the way my blue eyes shined
Put those Georgia stars to shame that night
I said, "That's a lie"

Just a boy in a Chevy truck
That had a tendency of gettin' stuck
On backroads at night

And I was right there beside him
All summer long
And then the time we woke up to find
That summer'd gone

But when you think Tim McGraw
I hope you think my favorite song
The one we danced to all night long
The moon like a spotlight on the lake

When you think happiness
I hope you think that little black dress
Think of my head on your chest
And my old faded blue jeans

When you think Tim McGraw
I hope you think of me

September saw a month of tears
And thankin' God that you weren't here
To see me like that

But in a box beneath my bed
Is a letter that you never read
From three summers back

It's hard not to find it all
A little bitter sweet
And lookin' back on all of that
It's nice to believe

When you think Tim McGraw
I hope you think my favorite song
The one we danced to all night long
The moon like a spotlight on the lake

When you think happiness
I hope you think that little black dress
Think of my head on your chest
And my old faded blue jeans

When you think Tim McGraw
I hope you think of me

And I'm back for the first time since then
I'm standin' on your street
And there's a letter left on your doorstep
And the first thing that you'll read

Is when you think Tim McGraw
I hope you think my favorite song
Some day you'll turn your radio on
I hope it takes you back to that place

When you think happiness
I hope you think that little black dress
Think of my head on your chest
And my old faded blue jeans

When you think Tim McGraw
I hope you think of me
Oh, think of me, mmm

You said the way my blue eyes shined
Put those Georgia stars to shame that night
I said, "That's a lie"

Tim McGraw by Taylor Swift shows alliteration towards the begging of the song. For example in the third stanza, Taylor says "and then the time we woke up to find." In this line, there are two examples of alliteration consonance. The first one being then the time and the second one being we woke. Another example of alliteration found in this song is in the eighth stanza. The first line in this stanza immediately shows it, "But in a box beneath my bed." The words but, box, beneath, and bed all start with the letter B.

She Wouldn't Be Gone
By: Blake Shelton

Red roadside wild flower if I'd only picked you
Took you home set you on the counter
Oh, at least a time or two
Maybe she'd thought it through.

Yellow sunset slowly dipping down in the rear view
Oh, how she'd love to sit and watch you
I could have done that a whole lot more
If I hadn't been so stubborn, been so selfish
Thought about her more, thought about me less
Joked and maked her laugh, held her when she cried
A little more that.. maybe I...

Wouldn't be driving like hell flying like crazy down the highway
Calling everyone we know stopping any place she might be
Going any place she might go beating on the dash
Screaming out her name at the windshield tears soaking up my face
If I had loved her this much all along, maybe maybe, yeaa maybe...
She wouldn't be gone.. she wouldn't be gone..

She warned me it was coming said if I didn't change
She was leaving
I just didn't believe she would ever really walk out,
God, I believe her now
Called her mamma, cried like a baby to her best friend
If they've seen her, they ain't sayin, they ain't sayin...
Now, I'm cursing like a fool, praying it ain't too late
All I wanna do is fix my mistakes.

Find her beg her for one more try, until then damn it I"ll..
Be driving like hell flying like crazy down the highway
Calling everyone we know stopping any place she might be
Going any place she might go beating on the dash
Screaming out her name at the windshield tears soaking up my face
If I had loved her this much all along, maybe maybe, yeaa maybe...
She wouldn't be gone..

I wouldn't be beating on the dash
Screaming out her name at the windshield tears soaking up my face
If I had loved her this much all along, maybe maybe, yeaa maybe...
She wouldn't be gone..

Red roadside wild flower if I'd only picked you
Took you home set you on the counter, oh at least a time or two
Maybe she'd thought it through...

One example of alliteration found in this song is found in the first stanza where Blake says "red roadside." This is an example of alliteration consonance because, both words start with the letter R. Another example of alliteration in this song is,"thought it through." This is said in the last line of the first stanza. This is also an example of alliteration consonance.

Red High Heels
By: Kellie Pickler

Baby I’ve got plans tonight
You don’t know nothin’ about
I’ve been sitting around way too long
Trying to figure you out
But you say that you’ll call and you don’t
And I’m spinning my wheels
So I’m going out tonight
In my red high heels

I’m gonna call up that old boyfriend
You said still has it bad for me
I’m gonna take him into town
Flaunt him around for everyone to see
Well you said so yourself
You know the deal
Nobody holds a candle to me
In my red high heels

Well you can watch me walk if you want to, want to
I’ll bet you want me back now don’t you, don’t you
I’m about to show you just how missin’ me feels
In my red high heels

All those games you tried to play
Well they ain`t gonna work on me now
I put up a barbed wire fence
around my heart
Baby just to keep you out
Well you thought I’d wait around forever
But baby get real
I just kicked you to the curb
In my red high heels

Oh you can watch me walk if you want to, want to
I’ll bet you want me back now don’t you, don’t you
I’m about to show you just how missin’ me feels
In my red high heels

Oh you can watch me walk if you want to, want to
I’ll bet you want me back now don’t you, don’t you
I’m about to show you just how missin’ me feels

Oh you can watch me walk if you want to, want to
I’ll bet you want me back now don’t you, don’t you
I’m about to show you just how missin’ me feels
In my red high heels

Instrumental

Oh you can watch me walk if you want to, want to
I’ll bet you want me back now don’t you, don’t you
I’m about to show you just how missin’ me feels
In my red high heels

Oh you can watch me walk if you want to, want to
I’ll bet you want me back now don’t you, don’t you
I’m about to show you just how missin’ me feels
In my red high heels

In my red high heels
In my red high heels

This song constantly shows alliteration in the consonance form when Kelli says "high heels." Also, another place alliteration is found is in the fourth stanza when Kellie says "But baby." These two words show consonance becuase they both start with the letter B.

Imagery

You Belong With
by taylor Swift

You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset
She's going off about something that you said
'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do

I'm in the room, it's a typical
Tuesday nightI'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like
And she'll never know your story like I do

But she wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts
She's Cheer Captain and I'm on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

If you could see that I'm the one who understands you
Been here all along, so why can't you see?
You, you belong with me, you belong with me

Walking the streets with you and your worn-out jeans
I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be
Laughing on a park bench, thinking to myself
Hey, isn't this easy?

And you've got a smile that could light up this whole town
I haven't seen it in a while since she brought you down
You say you're fine, I know you better than that
Hey, what ya doing with a girl like that?

She wears high heels, I wear sneakers
She's Cheer Captain and I'm on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

If you could see that I'm the one who understands you
Been here all along, so why can't you see?
You belong with me

Standing by and waiting at your back door
All this time how could you not know?Baby, you belong with me, you belong with me
Oh, I remember you driving to my house in the middle of the night
I'm the one who makes you laugh when you know you're 'bout to cry
And I know your favorite songs and you tell me 'bout your dreams
Think I know where you belong, think I know it's with me
Can't you see that I'm the one who understands you?
Been here all along, so why can't you see?
You belong with me
Standing by and waiting at your back door
All this time, how could you not know?
Baby, you belong with me, you belong with me

You belong with me
Have you ever thought just maybe
You belong with me?
You belong with me

One song I chose from my theme and genre that shows imagery is You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift. This song was written about a typical teenage girl who falls in love with someone who only likes her as a friend. In this song, Taylor describes how she has always been there for this boy and feels as though she knows him better than the girl he fell for ever will. To show this Taylor says, "She'll never know your story like I do." In this song, the first stanza automatically shows you imagery. "You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset, she's going off about something that you said, 'cause she doesn't get your humor like I do." To me, this paints a picture in your head of a boy on the phone with his girlfriend who is complaining to him about one thing he said that was sarcastic or supposed to be funny, while he is trying to apologize to her but she just doesn't want to hear it. Another part of this song that shows imagery is the third stanza. Taylor sings, "But she wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts, she's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers, dreaming about the day when you wake up and find, that what your looking for has been here the whole time." While listening to this, I clearly see two totally different kind of girls in mind; i picture a girl in a short skirt and another in a T-shirt. I also see a girl out on the football field leading the cheer squad and another sitting on the bleachers cheering on the football team. Thus, You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift is a great song showing imagery in heartbreaks through country music.

Just A Dream
by: Carrie Underwood

It was two weeks after the day she turned 18
All dressed in white, goin? to the church that night
She had his box of letters in the passenger seat
Six pins in her shoe, somethin? borrowed, somethin? blue

And when the church doors opened up wide
She put her veil down, tryin? to hide the tears
Oh, she just couldn?t believe it
She heard the trumpets from the military band
And the flowers fell out of her hands

Baby, why'd you leave me? Why'd you have to go?
I was countin? on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe

It's like I'm lookin? from a distance, standin? in the background
Everybody's sayin?, he's not comin? home now
This can't be happenin? to me, this is just a dream

The preacher man said, ?Let's bow our heads and pray
Lord, please lift his soul and heal this hurt"
Then the congregation all stood up and sang
The saddest song that she ever heard

And then they handed her a folded up flag
And she held on to all she had left of him
Oh, well, what could?ve been?
And then the guns rang one last shot
And it felt like a bullet in her heart

Baby, why'd you leave me? Why'd you have to go?
I was countin? on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe

It's like I'm lookin? from a distance, standin? in the background
Everybody's sayin?, he's not comin? home now
This can't be happenin? to me, this is just a dream

Ooh, baby, why'd you leave me? Why'd you have to go?
I was countin? on forever, now I'll never know

Oh, I'll never know
It's like I'm lookin? from a distance, standin? in the background
Everybody's sayin?, he's not comin? home now
This can't be happenin? to me, this is just a dream

Oh, this is just a dream
It?s just a dream, yeah, yeah

Another song i chose that shows imagery is Just A Dream by Carrie Underwood. This song talks about a teenage girl who is getting married just two weeks after her eighteenth birthday. She married a man in the military who later in the song dies while fighting for his country. Imagery is found in the first stanza of the song. "It was two weeks after the day she turned eighteen, all dressed in white, going to the church that night." In this stanza I can picture a young girl dressed up in her beautiful white wedding dress on her way to her wedding. Another part of this song that shows imagery is "The preacher man said let us bow our heads and pray, lord please lift his soul and heal this hurt, then the congregation all stood up and sand the saddest song that she ever heard." While listening to Carrie sing this part i picture everyone in the congregation bowing their heads to pray and not long after, standing up to sing an extremely sad song, so sad that she never thought she could hear anything like it. In conclusion, Just A Dream by Carrie Underwood is a great song in heartbreak though country music that demonstrates imagery.

Heartbreak Through Country Music

The genre and theme I chose is heartbreak through country music. There are many songs that inspired me to choose this. The song that mainly inspired me is Cold As You by Taylor Swift. In this song, Taylor talks about how she fell deeply in love with this boy who then crushed her. Taylor states "and now that I'm sitting here thinking it through, I've never been anywhere cold as you." By this, Taylor means that she has never felt pain the way he made her feel it. In this song Taylor also says "oh what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day." I think this is saying she was having such a great day and then her heart was broken. Also, in the song Taylor says "you put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray, and I stood there loving you and wished them all away." This is stating that after Taylor fell deeply in love with this boy, he "put up a wall" between the two of them as if to block Taylor out of his life but, nothing changed the way she felt, she still loved him and wished he didn't build up this wall between them.
